Klokunst Galerien

The Klokunstgalerien (Toilet Art Galleries) were founded during the residency Toilets are... by Tedious Work in June & July 2025. Toilets are….. concerned itself with friendly dysfunctionalities and how they instigate inspiring interactions between strangers in and around the toilets.

The Klokunstgalerien were established as a testing ground for Tedious Works wider investigation and ambitions for more art in toilets and stand now as a invitation for more people to become engaged in this topic.

The Klokunstgalerien are not a new space physically, but rather ideologically. They are a re-imagining of an existing non-artistic space i.e. the toilets and surrounding corridors in the basement of E-Werk Freiburg. There are three new gallery spaces: gallery A is the open corridor space, gallery B is the former mens toilet and gallery C is the former women’s toilet. It is crucial to note that gallery B and C, whilst being artistic spaces, remain functionally as toilets to be used by visitors to E-Werk. All art that takes place in the Klokunstgalerien thus needs to respect the necessary function of the toilets and question how it intersects this requirement.

The residency Toilets are… was funded by Residenzförderung of Fonds Darstellende Künste in cooperation with Flausen+.
